In the Stars January 3-10, 2015…shining light on the astrology of the week: New Moon

The new year is off to a busy start. Mercury is in slow motion, and turns retrograde on January 5. Mercury and Mars are in square aspect again this week, which may result in restlessness, mix-ups, and impatience. Move through the minor challenges, and give the week the works at this demanding beginning of the new year.

Sunday the Moon is Void of Course until 11:36 AM PST when it moves into Scorpio and conjuncts Mars, just as Mars enters Scorpio. Emotional storms may whip up. You may be dreading the work week when the world will be getting back to normal after the holidays. Exercise patience this testy day, especially if you are traveling. The Mars-Moon conjunction makes a challenging square to Mercury, and this energy is compounded with Mercury within two days of turning retrograde. Slow down, and roll with the punches.

Monday and Tuesday the Moon is in Scorpio where it stirs deep emotions and brings hidden matters to the surface. Benefic aspects to the Moon on Monday offer opportunities to use our feelings in service of larger life goals. Set intentions for the week, the month, and the year ahead.

Tuesday Mercury becomes stationary retrograde until January 26, beginning a period of review and renewal. An exact Mercury-Mars square and exact Pluto-Sun conjunction may make us feel easily overwhelmed and irritable, or we could be energized and ready to meet the challenges and changes that face us. This day has many rough edges; thus, we need to be especially conscious about how we use the energy. The Scorpio Moon is VoC all day until it moves into Sagittarius at 10:56 PM PST. This is not a day for activities or meetings calling for decisions. Attend to routine tasks and keep things as simple as possible. I’ll be leaving that night on a big trip to Bali and India for several weeks. These aspects are not what one would choose for the start of a trip, but they are the fated offerings in saying “yes” to these opportunities. Choose empowerment in dealing with pressure, and choose patience and perseverance in dealing with mistakes and mishaps.

Wednesday continues to be another challenging, edgy day. However, it is buoyed by the optimistic Sagittarius Moon that conjuncts sweet Venus. Set goals high, and focus on manifesting them.

We are jolted out of our comfort zone on Thursday when the Sun squares Uranus. Dare to live your life differently! A Moon-Uranus trine enables us to adjust to change. Jupiter stations turning retrograde for the next four months, until May 9. When a planet stations, or turns direction, its energy is amplified. Jupiter is the planet of optimism and expansion, and yet its retrogradation call us to draw inward and re-evaluate our beliefs and goals. Jupiter is in Virgo, a sign that symbolizes self-improvement. Consider learning some new skills that can be shared or expressed when Jupiter turns direct later in May.

The weekend’s serious, productive Capricorn Moon calls for getting things accomplished. Mercury in retrograde motion arrives back in Capricorn, beckoning us to re-think and re-do some of our work projects. Venus and Mars are exactly conjunct, giving focus for diligent work on our goals. The dark Moon on Friday calls for quiet and solitude; it’s not a good party night, so take the evening to unwind from the week, and get oriented to make the most of the rest of the weekend.

Saturday sports a New Moon at 19 degrees Capricorn. This one is tightly tied in with the Uranus-Pluto square, making it a powerful new lunar month, the first New Moon of 2016. Capricorn symbolizes self-reliance and mastery. Consider what has been stirred up the previous few days when the Sun conjoined Pluto and squared Uranus. Make a plan for moving forward with your life in new ways. This New Moon symbolizes big change.

Enjoy a leisurely Sunday brunch while the Moon is VoC. At 12:23 PM PST the Moon enters Aquarius tropically. Tempers could be short, so avoid confrontations. Take some space for yourself in the evening, and plan your week ahead. Address the intentions you set for the new lunar cycle marked by the New Moon.

The Week in Short:
Sunday: Emotions run high and the day may be full of challenges. Stay cool and be patient.
Monday: Feelings run deep. Use them to serve larger life goals.
Tuesday: Mercury turns retrograde through January 26. Time to renew, re-think, and re-do. Rough day. In addition, the Moon is VoC all day from 9:47 AM to 10:56 PM PST.
Wednesday: Challenging, edgy day. Set goals high and focus on manifesting them.
Thursday: Dare to live life differently. Commit to learning a new skill over the next four months while Jupiter is retrograde.
Friday: Focus on work, and also take time out for quiet and solitude at the dark of the Moon.
Saturday: Powerful New Moon in Capricorn. Make a plan for moving forward with your life in new ways.
Sunday: Take it easy Sunday morning. Take time and space for yourself in the evening, and plan the week ahead.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet and before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it’s difficult to make decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. You will more easily get lost or meander if you’re trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.

One Response to In the Stars January 3-10, 2015…shining light on the astrology of the week: New Moon

  1. Joseph John Lang, Ph.D. says:

Bali and India! I hope your energies are high. Yes, as a natal Sagittarian, I’d take up the opportunities and, as you suggest, just see how the vibes of the planetary drama express themselves while traveling and being there. I did this when I spent over a month in the USSR, and the time there was extremely enlightening (sometimes humorous “with an edge,” as, for example, when I was sitting on a desk-chair in a lecture hall in Leningrad, and the chair kept creaking, as people in the row behind me were chuckling; the entire desk-chair crashed to the floor, the lecturer stopped and scowled at me, as I picked up the pieces and laid them in a pile on the floor; this was in a very highly esteemed institute with very polished floors and wood furniture; the situation was funny, but I did hurt my back). There was a lot of “humor with an edge” as I went on.

One of my best friends in this lifetime was from India (he died about two years ago now). He used to say “The trip is so . . . long,” as he tried to get his Canadian kids acquainted with the family back there.

Best wishes for this great travel opportunity!
