In the Stars December 27, 2015-January 3, 2016…shining light on the astrology of the week

Even though you may be taking it easy this holiday week, it is likely to be a busy one, as Mercury is advancing toward its retrograde motion that will occur on January 5. Get things completed that call for announcements, travel plans, and any coordination of details for projects already in motion.

Mercury and Mars are in square aspect all week, which will make it difficult to reach easy agreements. Travel may be challenging. There could be mix-ups that call for patience, and yet the Mercury-Mars square will not be long on patience.

Sunday the Moon is in exuberant Leo, coloring the day fun and playful. Leo rules the Sun. If there is sunshine available where you live, take some in through outdoor activities. The Moon trines Saturn in the evening, promising a responsible closure to the Christmas holiday weekend.

If you are on an extended holiday, Monday promises to be a fun day. A fire trine from the Moon in Leo to Uranus in Aries could deliver something unexpected. Do something new and exciting. Anticipate the surprising twists and turns of the day.

The Moon in Virgo Tuesday through Thursday evening will make it easy to do holiday clean-up. Virgo loves to work on self-improvement, so you will be ready to make some sound new year’s resolutions. The Sun’s sextile to Neptune on Tuesday and the Moon’s opposition to Neptune on Wednesday help us envision what we want. This Virgo Moon will help you gear up to get back in shape after the holidays with more attention to diet and exercise. Wednesday’s Moon-Pluto trine is especially powerful, helping us get a lot accomplished, if we get organized. Thursday, New Year’s Day, continues to give us a generous dose of Virgo efficiency and optimism. Plan to make the most of a helpful and generous Moon/Jupiter conjunction. As the clock marches toward the New Year, relax and enjoy a toast to the new year with good food, drink, and friends. Venus moves into Sagittarius mid-week, encouraging us to expand and explore. Adventure calls! During Venus’ stay in Sag until January 24, explore cuisine and culture out of the boundaries of your normal life.

New Year’s Day is blessed with a nice and easy Moon-Venus sextile. Enjoy the beauty and bounty of this first day of 2016.

In contrast, Saturday may be turbulent, as the peace-loving Libra Moon squares Pluto, and opposes Uranus. Use this high-pressured energy by pushing yourself with physical activity and projects. Now that we’re moving into the new year, get moving. The Moon is Void of Course all day; so focus on projects and routine tasks. This is not a good day for after-Christmas shopping.

Sunday morning the Moon continues VoC until 11:36 AM PST when it moves into Scorpio and conjuncts Mars, just as Mars enters Scorpio. Emotional storms may whip up. You may be dreading the work week when the world will be getting back to normal after the holidays. Exercise patience this testy day, especially if you are traveling. The Mars-Moon conjunction makes a challenging square to Mercury, and this energy is compounded with Mercury within two days of turning retrograde. Slow down and roll with the punches.

Ten Things to Do with Venus in Sagittarius (December 29-January 24)

  1. Invite someone to dinner who is from a different culture or has a different religion. 2. Express appreciation to your in-laws. 3. Plan your next long-distance trip (or make a wish list). 4. Read a book about a far-away country, culture, or religion. 5. Expand your knowledge of metaphysics. 6. Write—to publish. 7. Visit a religious art exhibit (e.g., the Asian Art Museum here in San Francisco). 8. Explore a philosophy through a book, book-on-tape, or a lecture. 9. Take a hike (Sagittarius rules the thighs)
  2. Venus in Sagittarius is idealistic in love: read some love poems that transport you to the ideal!

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet and before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it’s difficult to make decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. You will more easily get lost or meander if you’re trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
