In the Stars January 20-27, 2019…shining light on the astrology of the week: Total Lunar Eclipse

This week begins with a potent Supermoon (when the Moon is closest to the earth) Total Lunar Eclipse on Sunday. It will also be a Blood Moon, as it will turn redish-blue as it eclipses the Sun. Three planets are in hard-working Capricorn: Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto, as well as the South Node, the Sun having just moved from Capricorn to Aquarius. In the shadow of the eclipse, the entire week is colored by a dynamic, benefic aspect between Jupiter (also conjunct Venus) trine to Mars, which perfects on Friday. What makes this aspect particularly spectacular is that Jupiter is strong in its ruling sign Sagittarius, and Mars is strong in its ruling sign Aries. These planets are high functioning in their ruling signs, which are both fire signs. This aspect gives us tremendous energy for forward motion this week. Use the Capricorn planets for good planning and discernment, and then use the bold, energetic Jupiter/Venus-Mars trine to get a lot accomplished. Get yourself ready to race, and then bolt forward toward your goals.

Sunday is super-charged with cosmic events. The Sun moves into Aquarius tropically, and forms a Supermoon Total Lunar Eclipse at 0:52 degrees of Aquarius/Leo tropically. The partial eclipse begins at 7:34 p.m. PST and ends at 10:51 p.m. PST. The Total Lunar eclipse is from 8:41-9:43 p.m. PST, with its greatest intensity at 9:12 p.m. PST.  Earlier in the day the Moon makes a powerful opposition to Pluto and Mercury, and squares Uranus. Pallas Athena joins the party to form an action-oriented cardinal Grand Cross. Chiron makes benefic aspects to the Full Moon, perhaps providing some salve for the wounds. Venus is exactly conjunct Jupiter, and is in a tense square to Neptune. What do all of these planetary aspects mean for us? Eclipse events are difficult to predict, and with Uranus making a square to the eclipse planets, how it will play out is even more unpredictable, but it will likely be an active, eventful day. Late degrees of cardinal signs are involved (Uranus in Aries, Moon/North Node in Cancer, Pallas Athena in Libra, and Saturn, Mercury, and Pluto in Capricorn). Cancer symbolizes consideration of family and tradition; Capricorn symbolizes building structures for the future. The Full Moon occurs in the first degree of Leo and Aquarius, symbolizing self-concerns and the community. The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon is “Under Emotional Stress, Blood Rushes to a Man’s Head.” This symbolizes people being fired up emotionally. The political stand-off between funding for a wall versus the continued shutdown of the government may to come to a boiling point, which this week’s Mars-Jupiter trine may help to resolve. The Sabian symbol of the Sun is ‘An Old Adobe Mission in California.” California’s adobe missions are symbols of the ability to use natural materials to build something lasting and enduring that nourishes the community. Lynda Hill wrote about this symbol (1 degree Aquarius) in her book The Sabian Oracle, “The Truth to be remembered is that contributing to other’s lives and caring about people in a community is not about control, but acceptance of, and reverence for, each person’s divinity.” Eclipse days are intense, and this one is particularly dynamic and potent. It is best to keep things simple, and keep stress to a minimum. Be prepared to meet challenges that may arise.

Monday morning’s light after the eclipse brings more tension through a Mars-Saturn square. Strong physical exercise Monday morning would be a good way to discharge this tight energy. Toward evening the Leo Moon makes benefic trines to Mars, Venus, and Jupiter, easing concerns, and bringing more joy and optimism.

Tuesday is buoyed by a Venus-Jupiter conjunction in the sunny, optimistic sign of Sagittarius. A benefic Moon-Uranus trine can add to the excitement and surprising possibilities.

The Moon ingresses into Virgo tropically mid-week Wednesday, focusing us on cleaning things up and putting order in our lives. There are several strong contradictory planetary alignments in this active day. In one sector of the sky–Scorpio to Pisces tropically, we have a flowing alignment between Ceres, Mercury, and Chiron, fostering self-nurturing and healing. These aspects can help us align our health concerns, and address habits to support good health.  A Moon-Saturn trine helps us lean into our work, and get things done. However, a Moon-Neptune square may compromise our focus, and yet it can give inspiration.

Our drive to put order in our lives and get a lot accomplished increases on Thursday as we ride the wave of the Virgo Moon, aspected by Pluto. Power through the tasks you have set before you. Don’t waste your time on meetings that are unlikely to produce concrete results, as the Moon is void of course all day from 5:50 a.m. until 8:02 p.m. PDT, when it moves into Libra. Finish the day with a sweet, relaxing connection with your beloved.

Friday is super-charged with powerful alignments to produce results. The cardinal, action-oriented Libra Moon makes a benefic trine to the Sun in Aquarius. Mars and Jupiter, strong in their ruling fire signs, Aries and Sagittarius respectively, perfect into a benefic trine at 9:53 a.m. PST, setting the whole day in fast motion. Plan ahead to make the most of this strong, capable, positive energy.

We can ride the wave of the high-energy Mars-Jupiter trine the rest of the weekend. The Libra Moon forms a challenging T-square with Pluto and the Mars-Uranus conjunction. This aspect may bring frustrating circumstances, while it also is powerful energy for change and accomplishment. Use this dynamic energy wisely and carefully. Slow down your tendency to charge ahead forcefully.

Sunday’s Scorpio Moon stirs deep feelings that may emerge as resentment, jealousy, or other difficult emotions, as a result of the Moon squaring Mercury and the Sun in Aquarius. The fixed signs are involved, and we are not likely to want to yield to others’ points of view. When the Moon is in Scorpio, we want to withdraw into ourselves and take some time for solitude. The cosmic energy also fosters research and problem-solving.

The Moon continues to shine in Scorpio on Monday, but is more relaxed. A benefic Moon-Pluto sextile will help us lean into the work week with strength and resolve.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it’s difficult to make good decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together, and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. We more easily get lost or meander in trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.
